The Mi’kmaq Warriors’ inaugural season in the ECJLL was a tremendous success. Not only did the team earn a playoff berth, but it also provided an opportunity to proudly showcase our heritage while giving our athletes the chance to do what they love most — play lacrosse. Our goals extend far beyond the scoreboard. From the beginning, our focus has been on growing the game, strengthening culture, and creating opportunities for Mi’kmaq youth across Nova Scotia.
The Warriors quickly became more than just a team — we became a family. A family that supports one another through the highs and lows of life. Today’s youth face constant negativity, and too often that becomes the focus. On the floor and within our team environment, that negativity fades. We strive to provide a positive outlet where athletes can be themselves, build confidence, and let their light shine — both now and into the future. The Warriors are a strong example of why sport matters, and the continued support from Millbrook demonstrates a deep commitment to providing Mi’kmaq youth with meaningful, positive opportunities.
Former Truro Daily News sports writer Ryan Cooke said it best:
“Even if the cards are stacked against you in life, having a tight unit around you gives you a chance to shuffle the deck.”
This mindset continues to guide the Mi’kmaq Warriors, and it will always outweigh any achievement on the floor.
Our committee firmly believes the Mi’kmaq Warriors can serve as a powerful goal and source of inspiration for Mi’kmaq youth in Millbrook and beyond. Our players are not only athletes but role models within the community and ambassadors of the game. One of our ongoing priorities is to provide as close to an expense-free experience as possible for players, while also holding them to a high standard as community leaders. Every player is expected to remain active in the communities that support us while embracing the heritage and cultural significance of the game.
Our core team goals remain clear:
Celebrate and promote the history, culture, and heritage of lacrosse
Build and strengthen community partnerships
Compete for ECJLL championships
Ultimately contend for national titles
The Mi’kmaq Warriors compete in the East Coast Junior Lacrosse League (ECJLL), which includes teams from across the region such as Halifax, Dartmouth, Sackville, St. Margaret's Bay and Saint John. The Warriors proudly host their home games at the Colchester Legion Stadium.
